The Zhangzhou Coastal Volcanic National Geopark, centred on the Volcanic Island area at Qisha Village, Qianting Town, Zhangpu County, and the Longhai coast, was among China's first national geoparks in 2001 and is a national 4A attraction. It preserves basalt, ancient craters and columnar joints formed 26 to 7 million years ago; the Niutoushan crater erupted 15 times, and Nanding Island has about 1.4 million hexagonal basalt columns.
