Zhangzhou Ancient City, on the north bank of the West Stream of the Jiulong River in Xiangcheng District, has been a seat of local government since the Tang dynasty. The old town of about 0.86 square kilometres keeps its "rivers as walls, bridges as gates" layout and its pattern of nine streets and thirteen lanes, with 15 protected heritage sites and seven national intangible heritage items such as puppet-head carving, glove puppetry and Xiang opera.
