The Ulanhada volcano group in Chahar Right Rear Banner, Ulanqab, on the southern edge of the Mongolian Plateau, covers about 280 square kilometres. It is the only group on the southern edge of the plateau known to have erupted in the Holocene. Its volcanoes are well preserved and barely eroded, with lava-dammed lakes, cones, craters, lava plateaus, lava flows and gorges, making it a natural "volcano museum". In 2015 it was named one of "China's most beautiful volcanoes" by Chinese National Geography.
