An ancient underground irrigation system around Turpan dating back more than 2,000 years, nicknamed the 'Underground Great Wall'. It uses vertical wells and underground canals to carry meltwater from the Tianshan Mountains to oases by gravity alone, and is ranked with the Great Wall and the Grand Canal as one of the three great engineering projects of ancient China.
