Flaming Mountains (Huoyan Shan) are a barren red sandstone range stretching 98 km across the Turpan Basin, with surface temperatures reaching 70-80°C in summer, making them among the hottest places on Earth. They feature prominently in the classic Chinese novel 'Journey to the West' as the obstacle overcome by Sun Wukong. A giant golden thermometer fan sculpture in the scenic area measures the ground temperature.
