The Taklimakan · 359th Brigade Cultural Tourist Area in Aral covers 11.98 square kilometres and has two parts. The 359th Brigade area, in the city centre on both banks of the Tarim River, includes the 359th Brigade land-reclamation memorial hall and monument and a memorial forest for Shanghai educated youth. The Desert Gate area is on the northern edge of the Taklimakan Desert. It was rated a national 5A tourist attraction in 2021.
