Nanxun Ancient Town in Huzhou was once one of the wealthiest silk market towns in all of China during the 19th century. Its prosperity is evident in its blend of Chinese and European architecture—many mansions built by silk magnates incorporate Baroque facades, stained glass, and Italian marble alongside traditional Chinese courtyards. The Jiaye Library (1924) is the largest private library from the Republican era.
