ℹ️ About
Lingling Ancient City, in Lingling District, Yongzhou, stands where the Xiao River meets the Xiang River. It covers 750,000 square metres and is open free all year. Founded in 124 BC as the capital of the Han-dynasty marquisate of Quanling, it became the seat of Lingling Commandery in the Eastern Han; only Changsha has a longer urban history in Hunan, and it is poetically known as "Xiaoxiang". Remains of the city wall survive, with Han and Tang foundations and Song and Ming brick and stone, and the streets keep a grid of two long and eight cross streets. Liu Zongyuan wrote his "Eight Records of Yongzhou" while in exile here, and the town is one of the birthplaces of Chinese landscape poetry. In 2022 it joined the second batch of national night-time culture and tourism districts. Highlights include Liuzi Street, the Dongshan scenic area and Chaoyang Rock.
