Lafa Mountain, in Lafa Town 11 kilometres from central Jiaohe, is an outlier of the Changbai Mountains and was named a national forest park in 1995. Its main peak rises to 886.2 metres over about 15,652 hectares. Known for granite caves, odd rocks and sheer terrain, it is said to have "81 peaks and 72 caves" and is called the most remarkable mountain in north-east China. Highlights include Chuanxin Cave, a natural cavern that can hold a thousand people, and rock shapes such as Chessboard Peak and Reclining Elephant Peak.
