Chongqing Jinyun Mountain National Nature Reserve, on the west bank of the Wentang Gorge of the Jialing River in Beibei District, 35 kilometres from central Chongqing, ranges from 200 to 952.5 metres in altitude and covers 7,600 hectares; it was set up in 2001. It has 1,966 plant species, 51 of them nationally protected rarities such as the dove tree, Cathaya, yew and tree fern, and 1,071 animal species. It is a typical subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest and plant gene bank of the upper and middle Yangtze. It also has ancient stone carvings and the former summer office of the Communist Party's Southern Bureau.
