Jinyintan Grassland lies north-west of Xihai Town, Haiyan County, covering about 1,100 square kilometres at an average altitude of 3,200 metres, 100 kilometres from Xining and 28 kilometres from Qinghai Lake. Its name, "gold and silver banks", comes from the two rivers that cross it. It was the site of State Factory 221, China's first nuclear-weapons research base, where the country's first atomic and hydrogen bombs were developed. Today it has the Atomic City Memorial Hall, opened in 2009, and a museum to Wang Luobin, who wrote the song "In That Faraway Place" here.
