Heping Ancient Town, in Heping Village, Heping Town, Shaowu, lies at the southern foot of the Wuyi Mountains and is more than a thousand years old. It keeps fortifications, a watchtower, a sub-county yamen, the Jukui Tower, the Heping Academy, one of the earliest in northern Fujian, and more than 300 Ming and Qing houses, making it a rare fortified village-town. Its intact 600-metre old street is called "the first street of Fujian". From the Tang until the end of the imperial exams the town produced 137 jinshi scholars, earning the name "hometown of jinshi". It is a national 4A attraction.
