ℹ️ About
Hangu Pass is at Wangduo Village, Hanguguan Town, Lingbao, where Henan, Shaanxi and Shanxi meet. First built in the early Zhou, it is one of the oldest surviving passes in China and a key section of the ancient Xiaohan road between Luoyang and Xi'an. The Qin-era pass lies in a narrow cleft between the Zhongtiao and Xiao mountains; set deep in the valley "like a box", it took its name from that shape and was fought over since ancient times. Remains include the base of the gate tower, the old Hangu road, the walls of the old town, a watchtower and a Warring States arrow store. The pass is also closely linked with the writing of the Tao Te Ching.
