Guoliang Village, in Shayao Township of Huixian, sits on a cliff 1,000 metres up in the depths of the Taihang Mountains, surrounded by mountains on three sides with a precipice on the fourth, and covers 15 square kilometres. Starting in 1972, villagers spent five years cutting by hand the 1,250-metre cliffside road known as the Guoliang Tunnel.
