One of the 'great three' Gelug monasteries of Tibet, founded in 1416 on the slopes of Mount Gephel near Lhasa. It historically housed thousands of monks (sometimes as many as ten thousand), was renowned for scholarly excellence, and served as the residence of the Dalai Lamas before the Potala Palace was built.
