Yueyang Tower is one of the Three Great Towers of the Yangtze River region, first built in 716 CE during the Tang Dynasty and overlooking Dongting Lake. It was immortalized in Fan Zhongyan's celebrated essay 'Record of Yueyang Tower' (1046 CE), which enshrined Confucian ideals of public duty over private pleasure. The adjacent Dongting Lake, China's second largest freshwater lake (2,625 km²), is a critical habitat for migratory birds.
