Diaoyu Fortress stands on Diaoyu Hill on the south bank of the Jialing River, 5 kilometres northeast of central Hechuan, commanding the meeting of the Jialing, Qu and Fu rivers. The Southern Song built it in 1243 to resist the Mongol army, and tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians held it for decades. The 2.5-square-kilometre site keeps gates, walls, a palace site, a military office and a naval dock, and is a national 4A attraction.
