Dashanbao, in western Zhaoyang District, 79 kilometres from Zhaotong, lies at an average altitude of 3,100-3,140 metres. It is home to the Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve, listed as a wetland of international importance in 2004 and one of China's largest wintering grounds for black-necked cranes, which numbered 2,143 in 2024.
