Caohai ("Grass Sea") Lake lies on the southwest side of Weining county town. With a normal water area of 31 square kilometres it is the largest natural freshwater lake in Guizhou. It formed in 1857 and is named after its thick water plants. It is home to black-necked cranes, hooded cranes and other first-class protected birds, and azaleas bloom around it in late spring.
