Fundamental

Biography

Fundamental is a Hong Kong band formed in the 1980s, debuting in 1986 through the second Carlsberg Pop Music Festival and disbanding in 1990. The band was initiated by Chen Guangrong and Liu Jiahuang, with Yang Hanyuan joining as the third member, followed by Lao Guochao, Fu Yuanwei, and Hu Yuyi in order. Encouraged by radio DJs Chen Huihong and Lu Yimei, the band participated in the second Carlsberg Pop Music Festival in 1986, finishing as runner-up to launch their career, and joined a record company in 1987. In 1988, the band released their first album titled "Fundamental", with lead songs "流亡舞影" and "Petula". All band members were in secondary school at the time and won the bronze award at the Hong Kong Commercial Radio Pop Music Awards in 1988. The band released their second album in 1989 titled "第二章", with lead songs "感覺號渡輪", "眼淚卻流在今天", and "告別英لز". The band released their third album in 1990 titled "Dreams", with lead songs "告別Barcelona", "月球地球", and "某一夜的IDD". That same year, the band disbanded due to members going abroad to study (with Chen Guangrong shifting to other musical pursuits). Notable members include Yang Hanyuan, who grew up in the Huoyan resettlement area and Aimin Estate, studied at Catholic Wohua College, and was a schoolmate of the other band members (except Hu Yuyi). He was active in school singing competitions and participated in inter-school music festival activities. He also joined the Hong Kong Children's Choir for two years. After graduation, he applied to the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as a dancer, received a scholarship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Trust Fund, and studied contemporary dance in London. He left the band to study abroad and gave up music development. He later joined a contemporary dance company in the UK, then moved to Canada where he founded a non-profit contemporary dance organization. Another notable member is Lao Guochao, who studied at Catholic Wohua Secondary School, and after leaving the band, studied film in France and opened a music school in Hong Kong in 2001.
