简介

Bai Longzhu (1906 – 4 February 1970), originally named Mai Longzhu, was known in Cantonese opera circles as "Ah Snake" (A She). He was from Nanhai County, Guangdong Province. He began his career in Cantonese opera at age 15 and was the first disciple of the legendary Xue JueXian. He initially performed as a young male lead (xiaosheng) but was later forced to switch to martial male roles (wusheng) after a famous incident during a Guangxi tour in World War II, when an actor failed to appear for "The Four Beauties" and Xue JueXian pulled him on stage as a replacement. He was also a Hong Kong film actor, appearing in approximately 90 films from his debut "Singing New Beauty Scheme" (1952) to his final film "Fan Li Hua" (1968). He retired in 1969 after 48 years of stage and screen work, following his son's and daughter-in-law's advice. He was a member of the "Sirs Club" which brought together Cantonese opera performers for socializing and mutual support. In 1955 he was sued by his mistress but acquitted. He built a villa called "Mai Lu" in Tuen Mun where he raised pigeons, bees, and fruit trees.
