简介
Choi Kwok-hing was born in Hong Kong in 1944, with his father running a Chinese medicine shop on Ki Lung Street in Sham Shui Po. In the 1950s, due to the uncertain political situation in Hong Kong, he was sent by his grandparents and father to study in Liwan District, Guangzhou. As a child, he grew up as close friends with the three brothers of Lo Hoi-pang and they listened to and imitated Bai Julong's Cantonese opera together. At the age of 8 or 9, he was selected as a "Little Red Bean" trainee under national key training programs. At 13, he aspired to become a football player and was admitted to the Guangdong Youth Sports Institute on Ersha Island, but quit due to his mother's opposition. After graduating from secondary school, he applied to the film acting department of Pearl River Film Studio but failed the interview due to his lack of fluency in Mandarin. Encouraged by the interviewer, he applied for the drama department as his second choice and was selected by Bai Ju-rong (father of Bai Xuexian) due to his good Cantonese, enrolling in the Guangdong Cantonese Opera School to study Peking opera, drama and Cantonese opera under four principals. He graduated from the Guangdong Cantonese Opera School in 1965, having performed widely and represented the school at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing where he was received by Deng Xiaoping. During the Cultural Revolution, he was sent to the countryside for ideological reform. His mother eventually secured his return to Hong Kong in the 1970s through applications to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee. After returning, he joined the Chun Hing Ming Cantonese Opera Troupe and worked at a garment factory to support his family. He performed as an emcee at nightclubs and acted in RTHK productions including "Under the Lion Rock", "Kowloon Walled City" and "Law Enforcer". In the late 1970s, through Yueh Hua, he joined Shaw Brothers films and was invited by Chung King-fai to join RTV for television dramas. In the late 1980s, he moved to TVB through Yueh Hua's referral and in 2013 he returned to TVB as a basic contract artist. His daughter is singer Choi Lap-yi (Jannelle Choi).
