Martin Tong Chun Ming
Biography
Tong Jun Ming (Martin Tong Chun Ming) is a Hong Kong actor and voice actor, born on 22 June 1973. He grew up as an only child in a housing estate in Tsuen Wan and graduated from Yan Chai Hospital No. 2 Secondary School in 1990. He accidentally joined the drama club in Form 4, which sparked his interest in acting. After graduation, he applied to the 3rd TVB Artiste Training Course but was not accepted, so he worked in computer graphics. In 1993, he successfully joined the 6th intake of the same course and chose to enter the entertainment industry as a TVB contract artiste despite opposition from his mother and girlfriend. Early in his career, he worked a part-time job to make ends meet, and from 2005 he began working as an amateur voice actor at Mei Ah Entertainment alongside acting.
In 2011, Hong Kong Television Network (HKTV) was established and began poaching TVB artists; Tong was approached but declined due to having recently renewed his contract. Later, he was offered an attractive salary and greater development opportunities by an HKTV executive, and after consulting his family, he joined HKTV. In May 2015, HKTV failed to obtain an operating licence, and after six months of unemployment Tong decided to change careers and learn interior decoration as an apprentice, but he was reminded of his true passion by his mentor and returned to TVB in September 2016.
Tong is known for portraying timid characters or grassroots figures, and became known for playing the "Dragon Horse," the third prince of the Western Dragon King, in the 1996 series Journey to the West. He also appeared in the sitcom War of the Genders, which achieved 50 rating points in 2000, and performed in 60 stage shows of the same. In 2020, he gained attention for roles in Al Cappuccino and The Witness. He also performed in concerts in Dongguan with singers such as Wang Jie, Lu Fang, and Tang Bao Ru. He left TVB again in November 2020 and settled in mainland China, signing a one-year cooperation deal with a Douyin company in Zhongshan in April 2021.
