He received his primary education at St. Canon's School, where he was a classmate of Chan Chin Pang, and graduated in 1989. He completed his secondary education at St. Francis College in 1994, then enrolled at City University of Hong Kong to study computer science in 1996, working part-time writing programs and modeling for advertisements during his studies. His family consists of his parents and sister, and his father passed away after suffering from nasopharyngeal cancer and liver cancer. He entered the entertainment industry in 2001 by participating in the "High-Quality New Music Generation" contest under the Sun Project, winning the "Champion" and "Super Popularity Potential Award," and also participated in the "National Pepsi New Star Contest" winning the "Charming New Star Award." These two competitions caught the attention of record executive Lee Chun, who signed him in 2002 with Da Guo Culture, officially launching his career, and the media dubbed him the "version of Cheng Yee Kin." In the same year, he received an invitation from Stephen Chow to be a music video consultant for his song "Accept Me," and also received praise from Mei Yan Fang for his positive image, winning Best New Artist awards from various Hong Kong media outlets. At an after-party following an awards ceremony, he responded to Lee Chun's congratulations with the phrase "evil cannot triumph over good," which caused a media controversy leading to accusations of alluding to his rival Mak Jun Lung, prompting Mak's father Mak Shiu Tang to have his work banned and transfer him to work in mainland China. In 2003, he ventured into singing, acting, and directing, appearing in his first TV drama "Freedom of Love" as the male lead, singing the duet theme song with female lead Chan Man Yuen and solo songs. He appeared in a TV commercial for a food chain store, repeatedly saying "Xue Xue Xue," which led the media to give him this nickname. In 2004, he was nominated for "Best New Performer" at the 23rd Hong Kong Film Awards for the movie "Sixth Floor Apartment," but his qualification was questioned due to his guest appearance in "Prison Storm: Young Criminal" in 1999 before his official debut, though the Hong Kong Film Awards Association overturned the objection and maintained his nomination. In the same year, he was transferred to work in mainland China, starring in the TV drama "Chinese Little Chef" under comedy director Lee Lee Chi. In 2005, he starred again in the New Year comedy movie "Empress's Smile" directed by Lee Lee Chi. In 2006, he starred in the urban youth drama "Love Ball and Beautiful Girl." In the same year, he faced a media scandal when a press interview was published with misleading content in a homosexual magazine, and he filed a lawsuit against the magazine but lost due to inability to trace the publication source. In 2007, his contract with the record company expired and he did not renew it.
