简介
Shing Fui On was born on February 1, 1955 in Sai Kung, Hong Kong, and was a descendant of indigenous inhabitants whose ancestors came from Xingning in Guangdong Province. Raised in extreme poverty, he dropped out of school at age 13 after completing only the fifth grade. He began his working life as a low-paid labourer in the photography department of Shaw Brothers Studios, earning only HK$60 per month, and worked as an extra before becoming involved with triads as a nightclub bouncer, until he was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison (serving two years and eight months with remission for good behaviour). After his release he returned to Shaw Brothers Studios where he met Leung Siu Lung, who was working as a martial arts instructor for ATV, and followed him as a martial arts stunt performer. He was also discovered by Lee Sau-Yin who introduced him to film acting, launching his career as a professional actor. His large build and fierce appearance led him to be typecast as triad bosses and villainous characters, most notably his role as "Big Fool" in the 1987 film Prison on Fire, which earned him his lifelong nickname. Over his career he appeared in over 350 films and television series, mostly in supporting roles, with TVB's 900重案追兇 (1996) being one of his rare leading roles. He was grouped with Wong Kwong-Leung, Lee Siu-Kei and Ho Ka-Kui as the "Four Great Villains of Hong Kong Cinema." He also participated in motorsport, finishing sixth in the ACP class at the 1985 Macau Grand Prix, and took up rally racing in 1993, competing in the Hong Kong-Beijing Rally twice. He served as a representative of Sai Kung Nam Wai Village and ran in the 2003 District Council elections as a pro-democracy candidate for the Pak Sha Wan constituency, losing to the incumbent who received 1,390 votes to his 977. In 2004 he was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer and underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Although he recovered from the cancer, he neglected follow-up for his hepatitis B carrier condition due to his busy work schedule, which developed into primary liver cancer. He passed away on August 27, 2009.
