Hugo Ng Toi Yung
Biography
Hugo Ng Toi Yung, originally named Wu Gui An, is a Singaporean actor and singer based in Hong Kong. Born in Singapore in 1959, he moved to Hong Kong with his family at seven months old and grew up in the Kwun Tong area. After finishing primary school, he worked in his father's garment factory until age twenty, then returned to Singapore for two years of military service. Before entering show business, he changed his name on a fortune teller's advice because his original name sounded like "no return." Graduating from the 5th batch of the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation's acting training program, he became a leading young actor in Singapore in the early 1980s, notably starring in the influential drama "A Journey Called Life." He returned to Hong Kong in 1987 and signed with TVB, quickly rising to become one of TVB's top leading men through dramas such as "Two Most Honorable Knights," "The Sword Stained with Royal Blood," and "The Jade Fox," with his period costume roles like Hua Wuque and Fu Hongxue becoming iconic. In 1993, he was frozen out by TVB for promoting his personal music album on rival channel ATV, which led to his decline and eventual dismissal from TVB, after which he faded from Hong Kong television for a decade. He returned to acting in 2005 with ATV's "Dangerous Characters." In 2015 he rejoined TVB on a six-year contract, and in 2016 his villainous role "Gao Tianjiu" in "Heart and Greed II" garnered widespread acclaim, earning him the Best Viewer's Choice Actor award at the first Audience's Television Awards. He currently works between Hong Kong and Singapore and remains active in mainland China.
