His father was a major landowner in Guangzhou involved in the restaurant, flour, soy sauce, and silk trades. He spent his childhood in a 200,000-square-foot mansion in the Xiguan area. After the land reform movement, the family lost all their possessions and fled to Hong Kong, where they lived in a small house in the Ho Man Tin area of Kowloon. He studied martial arts under master Kwan Ching-leung, learning Tai Chi, Wing Chun, Xingyi Quan, and Baji Quan. Lee Ka-ding entered the entertainment industry in 1965, working as a "dragon and tiger martial artist" (stuntman) from age twenty, then becoming an action choreographer three years later. He became the first action director at Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), where he founded the network's martial arts division. He directed action scenes in the 1976 TV series "The Legend of the Book and the Sword." He later transitioned to acting and became known for his role as "Lee Wai" in the comedy series "Hong Kong 81 to Hong Kong 86." In 2016, he shifted primarily to hosting cooking and food programs, with his most notable work being "Ah Yeh Kitchen." He is nicknamed "Ding Yeh" in the industry due to his stern and powerful appearance. He married actress Sze Ming in 1977 and had twin sons who both became actors; they divorced in 1994.
