Li Ying, also known by his real name Li Zhongying and his directing name Li Ying, was a Taiwanese and Hong Kong actor, director and screenwriter. He was born on 20 May 1923 in rural Henan province, China. Passionate about theatre from a young age, he joined a military drama troupe in 1941 to begin his artistic career. He starred in Taiwan's first Mandarin-language film "阿里山風雲" in 1949, portraying the character Wu Feng, and sang the famous song "高山青" featured in the film. He later joined Shaw Brothers in Hong Kong in 1963, taking on diverse roles and earning recognition as one of the "Four Taiwanese Giants" in Hong Kong entertainment. He returned to Taiwan in the 1970s, working as a director and television actor in productions such as "包青天" and "昨夜星辰". He was nominated for a Golden Bell Award in 1996 for his role in "希望與選擇". He remained devoted to theatrical art throughout his life, founding the "華夏劇團" in 2000. He passed away in Taipei on 22 July 2005 from lung cancer at the age of 82.
