简介
Fung Ging Man was a famous Hong Kong film actor, born in Shanghai in 1914 or 1915, known for playing villain roles in cinema. He began his film career in Hong Kong in 1933 while still a high school student, frequently contacting staff of the "Tian Yi" film company in To Kwa Wan; after becoming familiar with them, he began working as an extra and became an intermediary for introducing extras, later transitioning to a permanent actor. In 1937, he made his film debut in "The Crazy Young Wife" produced by Nanyang Film Company. It is said that during the resistance period, he organized a group of brothers to prevent gangsters from extorting film workers, and opened the warehouses of hoarding rice merchants for profiteering to feed the poor and refugees. He spent most of his film career playing villainous roles mainly as supporting characters, his typical appearance being a woolen cap and short Tang-style clothing. In 1983, an article in "Film Double Weekly" about supporting actors featured Lee Sau Kei, who advocates for extra actors' rights, being asked about the rumor that Fung Ging Man was a gangster enforcer in real life; Fung replied that he was close to some such characters and therefore performed convincingly. One of his rare positive roles was portraying a Shaolin grandmaster in the 1965 film "Yi Tian Tu Long Ji". According to director Lo Dun, the Cantonese colloquial terms "Gelefei" and "Kalasu" both originated from Fung Ging Man: one day while filming on a beach, he saw a foreign couple discussing a group of rare small animals on the beach, and blurted out "Gelefei" to describe the animal group to crew members including Bai Yan, but he himself didn't know the meaning of the term, perhaps random words in a moment of tension; some believe "Gelefei" was inspired by an English word he heard from the foreign couple that remained in his mind; thereafter Fung habitually used "Gelefei" to refer to unknown animals or even unknown persons, and possibly because he was the leader of extras, the term "Gelefei" later became synonymous with extras; the situation of "Kalasu" was similar, one day while filming another film he was entangled with Zhang Ying in beach mud, and during that time he was disturbed by an unknown animal, and blurted out the meaningless "Kalasu" to refer to the animal. The obituary published by "Film Double Weekly" about Fung Ging Man also recorded the rumor that using "Gelefei" to refer to extras was his creation. Fung stated that during the 1967 riots period he invested in films with friends and even managed to invite the popular Chen Bao Zhu to participate, but due to the riots the box office performance was very poor. He considered film investment highly speculative and was very cautious about it. In the 1980s, he participated in television productions on RTV network. Fung Ging Man passed away on May 8, 1994, at the age of 79.
