John Ching Tung
Biography
John Ching Tung is a Hong Kong film actor and producer, originally named Cheng Xian Dong. He was born on 18 February 1961 in Guangzhou, and in 1978 he moved to Hong Kong to develop his career due to his love for cinema. He began working at Redi Television in behind-the-scenes roles such as script supervisor, props, and production. After Redi was acquired and renamed ATV, he began working in film production while continuing at ATV until his contract ended in 1987. After leaving television, he worked as a producer for some independent production companies, and a year later he was invited by film producer Xiang Hua Sheng to appear in the film "Eighteen Marriages of a Good Woman" and serve as producer, officially transitioning from film producer to full-time film actor. He became well known for his roles in the 1990 film "Dragon in Prison" as Sha Mi, and in the "Gambler" series as the one-eyed character Da Jun. He also collaborated with Stephen Chow in many films and is considered one of the important supporting actors in Hong Kong cinema. In 2002, due to the financial crisis and SARS epidemic that weakened Hong Kong's film market, he returned to behind-the-scenes work, opened an advertising company, and gradually stepped away from acting. After a long hiatus, he noticed in 2009 that the film industry was recovering, so he returned to cinema and directed the martial arts film "Cai Li Fo Boxing 2010" in 2010, focusing on developing his career in mainland China. In 2011 he married his wife Liu Yajuan in Tonghua City, Jilin Province, and they have two daughters. In 2016 he became a spokesperson for the Taiwanese mobile game "Diamond Slots," marking his first game endorsement and visit to Taiwan. He has stated in media interviews that he refuses to play rapists or Japanese characters to avoid embarrassing his daughters and stirring controversy. He continues working in mainland films and commercial events, and is active on Douyin, sharing clips of his life and work to over 316,000 followers.
