Cheung Ying-choi was a Hong Kong Cantonese film actor, television actor, and veteran voice dubber. Born in Hong Kong in 1934 and raised there, his ancestral home was Hunan Province. He began his acting career in 1950 at age 16 and joined Yongmao Film Company in 1953. In 1956 he joined Shaw Brothers and became one of the leading male stars of Cantonese films in the 1960s, alongside Hu Feng, Lui Kei, and Patrick Tse. Known for his tall, handsome appearance and simple, honest image that appealed to female audiences, he was called the Cantonese version of Guan Shan. His career peaked in 1964 with the film Queen of the Street Market co-starring Lam Fung. He co-founded the Wanfu Film Company in 1966. As Cantonese films declined in the mid-1970s, he moved to television and joined TVB, working in dubbing and on-screen acting until his retirement in 2006, and was regarded as one of the finest voice actors of the 1970s. He was also a skilled oil painter whose artwork was used in the 1959 film Love on the Independence Bridge. Cheung Ying-choi passed away in June 2023 in a nursing home at the age of 88.
