简介

Teddy Chen is a Hong Kong film director, born on 26 April 1958. He comes from a diverse family background—his great-grandfather was an official in the Qing dynasty, his grandfather was a university president, and his maternal grandmother was the housekeeper of a large Shanghai estate. He grew up in Kowloon City and studied at St. Teresa's English School. After primary school he was sent to Taiwan to live with his grandmother and uncle, then returned to Hong Kong to complete his education. He was unable to study at UCLA due to his father's opposition and stopped formal academics, but frequently watched films. He began his artistic career in 1978 when he met director Xu Xiaoming at a bowling alley and was invited to act in a television drama. He worked as a screenwriter and then as Jackie Chan's personal assistant before resigning to pursue his dream of film directing. He directed his first film "My Wife Is Not Human" in 1989. He achieved major success directing action films and won Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2010 for "Bodyguards and Assassins," as well as multiple Best Action Choreography awards.
