简介

Chao Feifei was born in Shunde County, Guangdong Province in the 1890s. He initially worked as a tailor before joining the theatre world at age eighteen in the 1930s. He quickly rose to prominence with the Datonghua Cantonese Opera Troupe, becoming the leading comedian (Chousheng), surpassing the famous Liao Xiahuai. Later, he moved with the Liyuanle troupe to Shanghai, where he performed "The Soul of the Jade Pear" at the Guangtai Theatre in Zhabei, achieving great success. His salary was second only to lead actor Xue Juexian. He also toured Southeast Asia for about four to five years. After returning to Hong Kong, he entered the film industry, making his screen debut in "Modern Bride" (1935) as a teacher, earning him the nickname "Teacher Chao." He appeared in nearly 250 films in supporting roles. In 1954, after a fire destroyed his home in the squatter area, he received aid from the South China Film Workers Union. When Cantonese-language films declined, he worked at the Wong Tai Sin Temple in Kowloon interpreting fortune slips. In 1959, he was convicted of heroin possession and sentenced to four months in prison. Chao Feifei passed away in the 1960s.
