Charles Ying is a Hong Kong singer and actor born on April 2, 1979. He is the son of 1970s Taiwanese singer Ran Hsiao-ling. He immigrated to Vancouver at age 4, returned to Hong Kong at age 7, attended King George V School, and later studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States, earning two diplomas in design within five years. He worked as a designer at Nike Asia Pacific Head Office before returning to Hong Kong. He was discovered by musician Mark Loo after performing "我是否還愛妳" for the film "大城小事", and was signed by Leon Lai to A Music. He released his self-titled debut album in 2005 and won the Metro Mandarin Newcomer Artist award. He released both Mandarin and Cantonese songs, then focused on film, appearing in several movies and TV series. He returned to music in 2015, releasing "過來人" in 2016.
