Raymond Wong Pak Ming was born on 8 April 1946 in a residential building in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island and grew up there; his ancestral home is in Guangdong Province. He graduated from a Confucian college school in 1957 and later attended St. John's English Evening School. He began participating in school drama activities during secondary school, and after graduation worked as a junior clerk in a trading firm, then became a manager at another trading company at age 24. He worked as a radio announcer in the evenings at a North Point radio station and later co-founded an amateur drama society with friends. He spent ten years in stage theatre and adapted several Western literary works. In 1978 he made his first film, "漩渦", but suffered financial losses. In 1979 he co-founded a new film company with his colleagues, which later became the famous Cinema City. He became one of the most prominent film producers, serving as chairman of Cinema City in the 1980s, and founded a film distribution company in the 1990s. He produced films that broke Hong Kong box office records, including "最佳拍檔", "開心鬼", and "家有囍事". In 2009, he founded a new film company with his son.
