Ram Chiang Chi Kwong
Biography
Ram Chiang Chi Kwong was born on July 2, 1961 on Cheung Chau Island, Hong Kong. He had several siblings and the family later moved to Kowloon's Tsim Sha Tsui, living in the Mei Lai To Building. After finishing primary school, he did not continue his studies and instead learned Shanghai tailoring for seven years at a workshop in the Mei Lai To Building. After his father passed away when he was around 19, he moved into other work and later became the lead singer of an amateur resident band at the Golden City Night Club in Chungking Mansions. To improve his English, he attended evening school at the Yat Tung English Tutorial School, completing five years of secondary education and taking the Hong Kong Certificate of Examination within four years. He subsequently joined "Canton Productions Ltd." as a behind-the-scenes crew member, working as a script supervisor, lighting technician, and assistant director. In 1985, he was invited to perform at George Lam's first concert, where his impression of Lam's singing voice caught the attention of PolyGram Records, launching his career as a front-stage singer. In 1990, he released the self-composed Cantopop duet "相逢何必曾相識" with Rita Carpio, which became regarded as a classic in Cantopop. The song won the "Ultimate Song of the Year" award at the 1990 Ultimate Song Chart Awards, as well as TVB's "Top Ten Gold Songs Award" and RTHK's "Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Award." Chiang later won both "Best Supporting Actor" and "Professional Actor Award" at the 2014 TVB Anniversary Awards for his role in the drama "Come On, Cousin." His English name "Ram" was given by George Lam, representing the right audio channel to Lam's left channel.
