简介
Janice M. Vidal is a Hong Kong singer of Filipino, Chinese and Korean descent, born in Hong Kong. Her father is Filipino and her mother is Korean with Chinese ancestry. She spent ten years of her childhood in South Korea with her mother, educated by foreign tutors, becoming fluent in English but not knowing Korean or Chinese. At age 11 she returned to British Hong Kong, where she discovered she had a twin sister, Jill (衛詩). She studied at St. Joan of English Primary School in Kowloon Tong and Delia Memorial School in Taikoo Shing. Due to her English-language education background, her record company gave her five years to learn Cantonese listening and speaking from scratch. She began learning to sing from her father at age 16, worked as a lounge singer, and participated in music work under the name Renee. In 2000, she joined TVB's Emperor New Talent Contest under the stage name Ming Lok-tik and reached the finals. She was later introduced to producer Mark Lui, who arranged for her to sing backing vocals for Leon Lai. Impressed by her unique voice, Lai signed her. In late 2004, her record company released English versions of Leon Lai's hits "我這樣愛你" and "情深說話未曾講" to radio. She debuted in 2005 with a Cantonese album and swept four major newcomer awards. She was later certified by RTHK as "Queen of Love Songs" and won top Hong Kong music awards including Gold Female Singer and Ultimate Album at Ultimate Song Chart Awards, Gold Female Singer and Song of the Year at Metro Radio Hits Awards, Gold Song Gold Award at Jade Solid Gold Best Ten, and Best Selling Local Female Singer at IFPI Hong Kong Sales Awards. In 2017, netizens voted her "Best Voice Singer". In 2021, she served as a mentor on TVB's singing competition Stars Academy.
