Cindy Yeung Chor Ying
Biography
Cindy Yeung Chor Ying, also known as Yang Chu Ying and originally named Yang Cuijuan, was a Hong Kong singer. Born in 1965 in British Hong Kong into a complex family, she had a younger sister named Yang Yilin. She dropped out of school early to work and became a resident singer at the East Sea Laser Hotel in Wan Chai at age 16. She was discovered by musician Lam Mok-tak, who signed her and prepared to release an album. In 1985, she participated in the Asia-Pacific Songwriting Contest Hong Kong final and the International Youth Year Hong Kong Songwriting Invitational, performing "Ten Thousand Tomorrows" in a duet with Li Chung-ho, which won first place and brought her fame. She also sang "Growing Up Alone," the theme song for the 1986 film "Goodbye Mama" starring Yip Tak-han. On 23 February 1986, she committed suicide by gas at home and died at age 21. Her death later sparked controversy over the song "If... Sunshine," with another singer claiming to be the original performer, and the dispute remains unresolved.
