Born in Beijing in 1969, Faye Wong grew up in an artistic environment as her mother was a soprano singer in a coal mine art troupe. She began her artistic career at a young age when she was selected as lead singer in a TV troupe affiliated with China Central Television. She moved to Hong Kong at age 18 and began learning professional singing. In 1989, she won an award at a regional music competition and signed with a record company. She released her first album under the stage name Shirley Wong in 1989. She became one of the most successful singers in China, achieving the Guinness record for "best-selling Cantonese female singer". She also starred in several successful films. She co-founded a charity foundation to help children with cleft lip and palate.
