In May 1978, while visiting Hong Kong on holiday, she entered the 1978 Miss Hong Kong Pageant hosted by TVB and won third place, then represented Hong Kong at the Miss International pageant in Tokyo, Japan. In 1979, she officially signed with TVB and entered the film and television industry. Her first dramatic role was in the 13-episode series "Youth Fever" produced by Gan Guoliang, working alongside Chow Yun-fat, Simon Yam, Cora Miao, and Wong Hang-sau. She then appeared in the 80-episode prime-time series "Struggle," playing the role of Qin Ling, a singer who did not seek fame or wealth, and personally recorded the insert song "Words of Tomorrow, Today," becoming the original first singer of the song. Feeling her singing skills were insufficient, she studied under soprano teacher Bao Peili to improve. She went on in dramas such as "The Shell Game," "The Yang Women Warriors," "Stardust," "The Legend of the Condor Heroes," and "The Return of the Condor Heroes," while also hosting TVB's flagship live variety show "Enjoy Yourself Tonight." In 1985, she moved to ATV, personally recruited by owner Qiu Degen, and hosted the first Miss Asia Pageant, becoming the first former beauty pageant contestant to host a major pageant. She also starred in ATV's "Spy Web of Love" and sang its theme song. She later connected with legendary Chinese musician Liu Chia-chang, who produced her first Mandarin album "I Won't Cry." In 1986, she gradually shifted her career focus to Taiwan while promoting her album across the strait. Her second album "What Evening Is This" won her the Best Female Singer award at the 23rd Golden Bell Awards in 1988, earning her the title "Golden Bell Song Queen," with nominees including Su Rui, Jiang Shuna, Zi Wei, and Da Xiao Bai He. In 1989, she went to London to mix her second English album "Warm Ways," becoming the first Taiwanese singer to work at Abbey Road Studios, achieving sales of over 400,000 copies. Her most famous singing works are "What Evening Is This" from 1987 and "Gone with the Wind" from 1990. She was also the second-generation female host of the 1990s TTV variety show "Rose Night," and her programs "Rose Date" and "Lighting the Lamp" were known for their depth, sincerity, and celebration of the positive side of human nature.
