Biography
Ng Dan Fung was born in 1927 in British Hong Kong, with ancestral roots in Shunde County, Guangdong Province. She stood 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighed 103 pounds, with a petite and delicate figure. At the time, she was studying at Shunde Normal College and also assisted her elder brother, with a particular love for singing. On July 27, 1947, she participated in the second Miss Hong Kong pageant held at the Army Swimming Pool near Victoria Barracks in Admiralty, co-organized by the British Air Force Club and the Hong Kong Chinese Amateur Swimming Club, with ticket proceeds going to flood relief for China and Britain. Although 18 contestants had registered, most withdrew at the last minute, leaving only six to appear. Wearing a green floral swimsuit, Ng Dan Fung paraded around the pool and was scored by 12 judges, with physique worth 40 points, posture 40 points, and appearance 20 points. She won the crown with 359 points, becoming Miss Hong Kong 1947. That evening, Sino-British Film Company signed her to a contract worth HK$1,500 to star in the film "The Splendor of the Rich," launching her entertainment career. After winning the pageant, she became an active Hong Kong film actress and singer from 1947 through the mid-1950s. Her father was a tea merchant who died before World War II. After the fall of Hong Kong in 1941, she moved to Guangzhou. In 1943, at age 16, she married businessman Au Sik-yuen as his second wife. After Hong Kong's liberation in 1945, she returned and opened a noodle shop, later establishing a coal business in Wan Chai. Following her pageant win, she suffered domestic violence from her husband, including beatings and threats with a razor. After retiring from show business, she entered the business world and ran a watch shop with her second husband.
