Kathrine Lau is a Hong Kong singer and actress, born Lau on 16 July 1955. She grew up in Hong Kong to Shanghainese parents, with her father working as a textile machine repair technician and her mother also employed at a textile factory. She was educated at Kowloon Tong School and was a class monitor with excellent academic results, though she did not attend university. She was captivated by the voice of singer Yao Su-jung and aspired to become a singer, saving money to attend her concerts at the Hong Kong Opera House. She learned singing from Shanghainese vocal teacher Lui Jing-jing at her parents' encouragement, through which she met Kwan Yuk-ying and Lee Siu-tin. She began performing at age 10 on the Hong Kong City Hall stage alongside her father, who performed Beijing opera. At age 15, she participated in the television talent contest "Sang Po Nights" under her stage name and won first place. She was then admitted to the second season of TVB's artist training course but withdrew due to her mother's strong opposition. She subsequently performed in nightclubs and in 1977 joined the second season of ATV's artist training course. She rose to fame singing "A Thousand Regrets" from the drama "Reincarnated," which became her signature work. Her first TV drama was "The Young Wanderer." In 1986 she joined TVB as a singer-actress, appearing in "Life's Road." In 1994 she left the entertainment industry to care for her cancer-stricken father. She returned in 2006 to appear in "Big City Little Stories" and later participated in the mainland Chinese drama "The Virtuous Empress Wei Zifu" in 2014. She has released several solo albums and continues to perform at concerts and occasionally appear in film and television.
