Karena Lam is a Hong Kong and Taiwanese actress and singer, born in Vancouver, Canada in 1978 to a Taiwanese mother of Japanese descent and a Hong Kong father. Raised in Canada after her parents' divorce, she returned to Taiwan to participate in a competition through which she launched her artistic career, appearing in music videos for stars like Jacky Cheung and releasing solo albums in Taiwan. She began modestly as an English tutor before entering acting. She achieved a historic milestone in 2002 by winning both Best Supporting Actress and Best Newcomer awards for "July Rhapsody" at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards. She received four consecutive Best Actress nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards for "The Eye," "The Floating Landscape," "My Sister," and "Home Sweet Home," a record in the history of these awards. In 2015, she won the Golden Horse Best Actress award for "Zinnia Flower," becoming the first actress to achieve the "Grand Slam" by winning Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Newcomer at the Golden Horse Awards. She married director Yuan Jianwei in 2010 and has two daughters. Her career expanded to include writing children's picture books inspired by her daughters, and she served as ambassador for the 48th Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2024.
