Maria Luísa de Melo Leitão was born in Hong Kong as a Macanese with one-quarter Portuguese ancestry, coming from a prominent Macau family. Her grandfather was the only notary public in Macau at the time, and her aunt was the first wife of Macau casino tycoon Stanley Ho. Her parents divorced when she was five, and she and her younger brother lived with their father. She studied at St. Paul's Convent School in Causeway Bay, where she was classmates with her cousin. Passionate about music, she was discovered by renowned musician Angus while participating in a singing contest, and in early 1984 she released her debut album "少女杂志" alongside Sarah Chan and Priscilla Chan, with the title track "絕對痴心". She and Sarah Chan released a second album "少女宣言，絕對熱恋" in 1985. After her father passed away when she was 18, she joined TVB under the arrangement of her uncle-in-law Stanley Ho, becoming a host of the children's programs "430穿梭机" and "闪电传真机", making her a well-known children's show host of the 1980s and 1990s. After leaving children's programming, she hosted various infotainment shows including "香港早晨", "K100", "城市追击", and "东张西望". In 2012, she won the Best Host award at the TVB Anniversary Awards for "最佳男主角", after which she expanded her career as an emcee, continuing to host the "十大劲歌金曲颁奖典礼" in 2013. In 2015, she launched her own sunglasses brand, LUISA LEITAO.
