简介
Vivian Lai Shui Yan, known by her nickname "Siu Yan Zi" (Little Grace), is a Hong Kong singer born on 18 February 1973. She grew up in Aberdeen, Hong Kong, and moved with her family at age four or five to Tai Heng Estate in Tuen Mun. She was a member of the Junior Police Call and participated in outside-school swimming competitions. At age eight, she joined the Tuen Mun Children's Choir and frequently took part in singing competitions. In 1989, she won a singing contest at Canton Disco in Tsim Sha Tsui, which led to her discovery by renowned musician Angus, who persuaded her family to sign a contract with BMG. In 1990, she released a compilation single titled "Greetings." In 1991, she moved to PolyGram Records and made her official debut with the song "Swear," releasing her first album "I Start From Here." In 1992, she released the album "Rainy Season Will Not Return," which drew public attention, and sang a duet with Jacky Chung titled "Endless Flow." Her major breakthrough came in 1993 with the song "One Person Has One Dream," which swept radio stations and topped various music charts, winning a Top Ten Songs award at the Hong Kong Music Awards that year. She released two platinum-selling albums that same year. She continued her success in 1994 with the platinum-selling album "On the Sunshine Road" and a compilation of her hits. In 1995, she released two Cantonese albums that both achieved platinum sales, then went to Taiwan to develop her career and released her first Mandarin album "Secret," with Taiwanese media describing her voice as "Little Teresa Teng." In 1996, she faced contract renewal issues with PolyGram and was frozen for a long period, resulting in poor sales for her album "Grace's Thoughts" which was released under unclear circumstances, after which she decided to leave the company upon contract expiry. Lai is known together with Liu Xiaohui and Tang Baoru as the "Three Little Flowers of PolyGram."
