Ivy Ling Po, born Huang Yu-chun in Swatow, Guangdong, was sold as a child to a family in Xiamen, Fujian, where she was renamed Chun Hai-tong. She fled to Hong Kong with her adoptive mother in 1949. She began her career in the 1950s starring in Amoy-dialect films and later moved to Cantonese and Huangmei-dialect films with Shaw Brothers in the 1960s.
