Anita Mui Yim-fong
Biography
Anita Mui Yim-fong was born on 10 October 1963 on Garden Street in Mong Kok, Hong Kong, the only child of her family born in Hong Kong. She grew up in a poor household; her father died early and her mother ran a traditional Chinese medicine clinic and a music school. Anita began singing with her older sister Mui Ai-fong at the age of four and a half to help support the family, and the sisters lost their childhood due to early work in singing venues and on the streets. In 1982, she participated in the first New Talent Singing Contest organized by TVB and Capital Records, winning the title with her performance of the song "Wind's Season" by Tsui Siu-fung, which impressed veteran musicians Wong Jim and Koo Kar-fui among the judges. The media dubbed her "Little Tsui Siu-fung" because of her relatively deep voice similar to Tsui Siu-fung. She released her first song "Heart's Debt" and her first album of the same name that same year. She became known as the "Music Queen" of Hong Kong and excelled as both a singer and actress. She passed away on 30 December 2003 at the age of 40 from cervical cancer complicated by lung failure. A statue of her was erected in 2014 on the Avenue of Stars in Hong Kong with the inscription "Hong Kong's Daughter Anita Mui" written by artist Andy Lau.
