Wan Guopeng was born on September 12, 1994, in Linkou County, Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province, China. He grew up in a family of comfortable means, with his father working as a factory accountant and his mother as an obstetrician. During high school, he became fascinated by traditional Chinese medicine and moved to Harbin to study acupuncture at Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine for three years. However, upon graduation, he realized he could not cope with the daily confrontation with illness and death that doctors face. During his internship in the Chinese medicine department, he took daily readings for an elderly patient suffering from lung cancer, but the patient died a week later from late-stage cancer. Wan felt deeply distressed and disillusioned by the sudden loss of life. He abandoned his medical career and searched for a new direction in life, until he read a sentence in the school library stating that young people should follow the direction of their passion and dreams, and the word "actor" came to mind. He decided to go to Hengdian and begin his career as an extra. In late 2012, he was cast in a leading role in the film "I Am Somebody" directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Derek Yee, which was released in 2015.
