Hui So Ying
Biography
Hui So Ying is a Hong Kong actress born around 1960 into a family of fishmongers. She developed an early interest in drama and acting, joining a theatre workshop at the Hong Kong Film Culture Centre where she studied under leftist Taiwanese director Ko Wu. After her mentor's death, she was encouraged to pursue acting auditions in the early 1980s. When she met director Fong Yuping and shared her story and relationship with Ko Wu, he decided to adapt their experience into a film. She starred in the 1983 film "半邊人" portraying herself alongside her real family and friends, earning nominations for Best New Performer and Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards, though she did not win either. Following the film, her film appearances became rare as she worked at Radio Hong Kong, television, and theatre. She married around 1985 to writer and music critic Fung Laichi and had two daughters who both studied music. She later served in the management of the Hong Kong Film Culture Centre, and her family converted to Buddhism. She occasionally returned to on-screen acting in the 2010s, appearing in "正义迴廊" which her daughter scored.
