简介

Candy Cheung Wai Ying (born 1 March 1960), originally named Zhang Hui Ying, is a Hong Kong actress. She comes from an artistic family; her father Zhang Yu Cheng was a Peking opera actor from Shandong who later became a martial arts instructor in Cantonese opera. Among her seven siblings is her elder sister Yuan Qiu, a martial arts actress. She grew up in To Kwa Wan and learned martial arts from childhood due to her family's Peking opera background. She graduated from Ling Kwong Primary School in 1972.

She entered the film industry in the mid-1970s before turning 16, joining Shaw Bros. where she became a preferred leading lady in martial arts films. In 1976 she joined Commercial Television (CTV) as its youngest actress, becoming one of the "Three Treasures of CTV" alongside Michelle Yim and Lee Tong Ming. She took her stage name from the network, with "Cheung" as surname and "Candy" meaning "clever as ice and snow." Her first drama was *The Sword Stained with Royal Blood* where she played the female lead at age 16, and she also cross-gender played the male lead in *The Duke of Mount Deer*.

After CTV closed in 1978, she moved to RTV with renowned producer Siu Sang and continued to receive prominent roles. She achieved widespread fame through her role in *The Spirit of the Sword* (1978) alongside Leslie Cheung, forming a popular on-screen couple. Between 1984 and 1985 she changed her stage name to Candy Cheung Wai Yi before reverting to her original name.

She worked with RTV and its successor ATV until 1986, then retired temporarily and emigrated to the United States with her first Chinese-American husband, working as a clerk. She returned to acting in 1989 with TVB but retired permanently in 1991 after five TV dramas and several films. In 2012 she made a guest comeback in TVB's *The Last Steep Ascent* at the invitation of producer Wong Sum Wai, and signed a two-year contract with TVB in 2017.

She has been married multiple times and has two daughters from her first marriage. In 2005 she married architect Yuan Hui Ming. After her acting career, she established her own chain of nail salons.
